Down Syndrome

What is Down Syndrome ?

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, also known as Trisomy 21. This extra genetic material affects the person’s physical features, cognitive development, and overall growth. It is one of the most common chromosomal conditions, occurring in about 1 in every 700 live births.

Diagnosis

Prenatal Screening Tests (during pregnancy)

Blood tests and ultrasounds (first and second trimester)
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) – analyzes fetal DNA in mother's blood

Diagnostic Tests

Amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) confirm genetic diagnosis during pregnancy

Postnatal Diagnosis:

Physical appearance and karyotype test (chromosomal analysis)

Important Facts:

Humans normally have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs).

In Down Syndrome, there is an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21, resulting in 47 chromosomes.

This can occur due to: Trisomy 21, Translocation, Mosaicism
