Cerebral Palsy (CP)

What is Cerebral Palsy ?

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders caused by abnormal brain development or brain damage that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. It primarily affects muscle tone, coordination, and motor skills, and can also impact speech, vision, cognition, and overall physical functioning. Though non-progressive (it does not worsen over time), the symptoms may change as the child grows.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy?

Prenatal factors (most common)

Brain malformation
Infections during pregnancy (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis)
Lack of oxygen supply to the brain

Perinatal factors (around birth)

Premature birth or low birth weight
Complicated or prolonged labor
Birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen)

Postnatal factors (after birth)

Brain infections like meningitis or encephalitis
Traumatic head injury
Severe jaundice

Diagnosis

Brain imaging tests like MRI or CT scan

Genetic or metabolic testing (in some cases)

Physical and neurological examination

Signs and Symptoms

Types of Cerebral Palsy

Spastic CP

Muscles are stiff and tight (spasticity)
Difficulty with movement and walking
Can affect one side (hemiplegia), both legs (diplegia), or the entire body (quadriplegia)

Dyskinetic CP

Involuntary, uncontrollable movements (twisting or jerking)
Muscle tone varies (too tight or too loose)

Ataxic CP

Poor balance and coordination
Tremors, shaky movements, difficulty with fine motor skills

Mixed CP

Combination of two or more types, often spastic and dyskinetic

Living with Cerebral Palsy

CP is not progressive, but its challenges can change with age. Many individuals with CP go to school, hold jobs, form relationships, and live independently especially with early intervention and family support.
